FDA clears test to help manage antibiotic treatment for lower respiratory tract infections and sepsis

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today cleared the expanded use of the Vidas Brahms PCT Assay to help health care providers determine if antibiotic treatment should be started or stopped in patients with lower respiratory tract infections, such as community-acquired pneumonia, and stopped in patients with sepsis. This is the first test to use procalcitonin , a protein associated with the body’s response to a bacterial infection, as a biomarker to help make antibiotic management decisions in patients with these conditions.

ALZHEIMER’S FAMILY CAREGIVER WORKSHOPS: Home Instead Senior Care will hold free Alzheimer’s Family Caregiver workshops from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Home Instead Senior Care office, 269 Bennett St., Luzerne. The workshops will help participants learn how to communicate with their loved one, manage difficult behaviors, and understand behavioral and cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Louisville churches to host benefit

An all-day event will be held on March 4 to raise money for a Louisville mother’s expenses from her fight with breast cancer. Christal VanLandingham Gregory was diagnosed with cancer just over eight months ago, and has gone through multiple procedures, treatments, and surgeries since her diagnosis.

The Alzheimer’s Association is continuing its tireless efforts to provide support services for sufferers of the disease, and to raise awareness and funds in 2017 with two spring events, and research collaboration with the University of Cyprus. A musical evening will be held on Wednesday, March 1 at Sotira Municipality Theatre to raise funds for the association’s voluntary services, which include paying for a qualified nurse to visit dementia and Alzheimer’s patients in the Famagusta district, and funding the Association’s free Support Centre and Sensory Room.

The complaint charges that OFTACOOP – also known as Cooperativa de MA dico OftalmA3logos de Puerto Rico – unlawfully orchestrated an agreement among competing ophthalmologists to refuse to deal with a health plan, MCS Advantage, Inc., and its network administrator, Eye Management of Puerto Rico, LLC. OFTACOOP’s concerted refusal to deal forced MCS to abandon its plan to engage Eye Management to create a lower-cost network of ophthalmologists. MCS was also forced to maintain its then-current reimbursement rates paid to ophthalmologists.
