Los Angeles, Feb 28 – Actor Matthew Broderick has been cast in Katrina: American Crime Story – the second instalment of the universally acclaimed and award-winning limited series American Crime Story. Broderick, a two-time Tony Award winner, will portray Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael D. Three people who say they are trying to help homeless victims of the August flooding berated the East Feliciana Parish Police Jury and parish homeland security officials Tuesday, accusing the latter of sabotaging efforts to obtain a FEMA trailer park in the parish. The Reileyville area of the town of Clinton was hit hard by the mid-August flooding, although some other areas of the parish also sustained damage.

Repair to flood-damaged Ascension Parish schools in design phase, bids out on two

The work to restore the five flood-damaged Ascension Parish public schools, as well as for other school district facilities that flooded, is now in the design phase, the School Board’s consultant reported this week. The work for two of those projects is out for bid – St. Amant Primary, with a bid due date of March 7, and St. Amant Middle, with a bid due date of March 28 – Todd Mann, project manager with consulting firm CSRS, of Baton Rouge, told the School Board on Tuesday.

President Trump Approves Major Disaster Declaration for Hoopa Valley Tribe

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal disaster assistance has been made available to the Hoopa Valley Tribe to supplement the Tribe’s recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe winter storm from January 3 to January 5, 2017. Federal funding is available to the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm.

City debates more firefighters

Training with deadly toxins at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston won’t resume until at least after March, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency announcement Friday. In a message to The Star on Friday, FEMA spokeswoman Stephanie Moffett wrote that the Chemical, Ordnance, Biological and Radiological Training Facility, known as the COBRA center, in Anniston, will not train with live agents through at least March.

The Louisiana Flood of 2016 is driving homeowners to buy federal flood insurance — some for the first time — after a steady, years-long decline in participation in the national program. The National Flood Insurance Program in 2016 is on pace to top its 2012 high in Louisiana of roughly 483,000 active policies, said Wayne Berggren, an insurance crew leader with FEMA.

Training center mistakenly exposed students to deadly ricin

A federal terrorism response center in Alabama mistakenly used the lethal form of the toxin ricin as it trained thousands of firefighters, paramedics and other emergency responders during the past five years. Federal Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Alexa Lopez said FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness is supposed to use a form of ricin that is safe to humans in training exercises.

KNOXVILLE President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration Thursday, ordering federal funds be made available to victims of the fires that killed 14 and damaged or destroyed more than 2,400 structures in Gatlinburg and the surrounding Sevier County communities. Sevier County residents and business owners who sustained losses from wildfires during the period of Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 are eligible to receive federal funds, according to a news release from the White House.
