A voting technology company swept up in baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 election filed a monster $2.7 billion lawsuit on Thursday against Fox News, some of the network’s star hosts, and pro-Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, alleging the parties worked in concert to wage a “disinformation campaign” that has jeopardized its very survival.
More From The Article….
“Throughout the nearly 300-page lawsuit, Smartmatic surgically dismantled the theories against it.
“The Earth is round. Two plus two equals four. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the 2020 election for President and Vice President of the United States,” the lawsuit said. “The election was not stolen, rigged, or fixed. These are facts. They are demonstrable and irrefutable.”
Smartmatic’s lawyer, J. Erik Connolly, told CNN Business that the case is one of the most “straightforward” he has ever seen. Connolly,
who secured one of the largest defamation settlements ever in the “pink slime” case against ABC News, told CNN Business that because Smartmatic’s role in the 2020 general election was limited to providing services to Los Angeles County, he could easily prove all the conspiracy theories false.
“By being able to say Smartmatic was in Los Angeles County and nowhere else, I’ve been able to prove a lie of everything they essentially said with one salient fact,” Connolly told CNN. “I’ve been doing this for a long time and that might be one of the easiest ways to demonstrate falsity that I’ve ever had.”
Also….
…”They needed a villain,” the lawsuit said. “They needed someone to blame. They needed someone whom they could get others to hate. A story of good versus evil, the type that would incite an angry mob, only works if the storyteller provides the audience with someone who personifies evil.”
“Without any true villain, defendants invented one,” the lawsuit added. “Defendants decided to make Smartmatic the villain in their story.”…
OPINION: This is how you hold liars responsible for the damage caused by their lies.
May this be the beginning of the end of the for-profit right wing media propagating knowingly false stories and narratives as a matter of their own financial success.
US Capitol rioter and so-called “QAnon Shaman” Jacob Chansley should be given organic food while in a Washington, DC, jail, a federal judge said Wednesday, after Chansley went on an apparent hunger strike last week claiming non-organic food was against his religion and sickened him….
House Democrats on Thursday asked Donald Trump to testify under oath for his Senate impeachment trial, challenging the former president to explain why he and his lawyers have disputed key factual allegations at the center of the case.
More from the article…
…The request from Raskin cites the words of Trump’s own attorneys, who in a legal brief earlier this week not only denied that Trump had incited the riot but also asserted that he had “performed admirably in his role as president, at all times doing what he thought was in the best interests of the American people.”
With that argument, Raskin said, Trump had questioned critical facts in the case “notwithstanding the clear and overwhelming evidence of your constitutional offense.”
“In light of your disputing these factual allegations, I write to invite you to provide testimony under oath, either before or during the Senate impeachment trial, concerning your conduct on January 6, 2021,” Raskin wrote.
Raskin wrote that if Trump refuses to testify, the managers will use his refusal against him in the trial — a similar argument put forth by House Democrats in last year’s impeachment trial, when many Trump officials ignored subpoenas.
“Indeed, whereas a sitting president might raise concerns about distraction from their official duties, that concern is obviously inapplicable here,” Raskin wrote.
Trump can decline the request to testify, and the impeachment managers do not have the authority to subpoena witnesses now since the House has already voted to impeach him. The Senate could vote to subpoena him, or any other witnesses, on a simple majority vote….
The leader of a private paramilitary group that provided security for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said he has formed alliances with other far-right groups to advocate for Georgia’s secession from the union, following the arrests of participants in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
Justin Thayer, head of the Georgia III% Martyrs, said in a text exchange with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this week.
Thayer said the Martyrs have allied themselves with fellow “Three Percenter” militia the American Brotherhood of Patriots and American Patriots USA (APUSA), a north Georgia group headed by Chester Doles, a Dahlonega resident who belonged to various racist and neo-Nazi hate groups before forming the new group in 2019.
The combined groups will advocate for Georgia’s secession from the union through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution or through “the collapse of the American experiment,” Thayer said.
NY POST: Westchester teen wins battle to start conservative club at school
PHOTO: #LukeWong, 17, displays his student-club flag after Harrison HS in #WestchesterCounty approved the on-campus presence of the conservative organization after two years.
HARRISON NY: One Westchester teen is painting the town — or, at least, his school — red, now that his conservative student club has finally been approved after a two-year battle.
The straight-A student told The Post: “I was really inspired to bring a conservative message to campus. I hoped to open up dialogue. I thought that the school would be totally willing to go for it.”
Instead, Wong was shot down by school administration in April 2019.
“I didn’t get a clear-cut reason why,” said Wong. It’s not easy being red in school these days, the teen said, adding that young conservatives fear “being cancelled or ostracized. People would label me. They’ll default to calling me racist or just not speak to me,” said Wong, a grandchild of Chinese immigrants who passed through Ellis Island.
Still, he noted, some 25 students expressed interest in joining the free speech-oriented club…..
On secret communication channels and open message boards, white supremacists are rejoicing at what President Donald Trump unleashed — and planning their next moves.
The belief that certain events or situations are secretly manipulated behind the scenes by powerful forces with negative intent.
Conspiracy theories have these 6 things in common
1. An alleged, secret plot.
2. A group of conspirators.
3. ‘Evidence’ that seems to support the conspiracy theory.
4. They falsely suggest that nothing happens by accident and that there are no coincidences; nothing is as it appears and everything is connected.
5. They divide the world into good or bad.
6. They scapegoat people and groups.
Why do they flourish?
They often appear as a logical explanation of events or situations which are difficult to understand and bring a false sense of control.
How do they take root?
Conspiracy theories often start as a suspicion. They ask who is benefiting from the event or situation and thus identify the conspirators. Any ‘evidence’ is then forced to fit the theory.
Once they have taken root, conspiracy theories can grow quickly. They are hard to refute because any person who tries is seen as being part of the conspiracy.
People spread conspiracy theories for different reasons:
Most believe they are true. Others deliberately want to provoke, manipulate or target people for political or financial reasons. Beware: They can come from many sources e.g. internet, friends, relatives.
The first step to prevent conspiracy theories is to know that they exist.
Be aware of examples and stop the spread.
Many examples of conspiracy theories can be found at this link.
By cutting doses in half or delaying second shots, some scientists say we could maximize the number of people who get vaccinated. Others argue that could be dangerous.
Wisconsin health system said that 500 doses of coronavirus vaccine that had to be discarded after they were left unrefrigerated now appear to have been deliberately spoiled by an employee.
