PIL challenges bid to deport Rohingyas

NEW DELHI: At a time when many countries are facing difficulties due to the surge of refugees, the Supreme Court decided to take up a PIL challenging the Centre's decision to identify and deport thousands of Rohingya Muslim immigrants back to Myanmar . Appearing for two Delhibased Rohingya Muslims - Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, both residing at Madanpur Khadar -advocate Prashant Bhushan said such a move would be unconstitutional as the SC had time and again ruled, as in the case of Chakma refugees, that it was the cardinal duty of the Union government to protect refugees who leave their own country because of persecution at the hands of state authorities.

Largest Indian Bank’s Profit Surges as Bad-Loan Ratio Narrows

State Bank of India , the country's largest lender by assets, more than doubled its fourth-quarter profit as its bad-loan ratio narrowed. Net income climbed to 28.1 billion rupees , or 3.55 rupees a share, in the three months ended March 31 from 12.6 billion rupees, or 1.64 rupees, a year earlier, the Mumbai-based lender said in an exchange filing on Friday.
