A plane carrying the Michigan men's basketball team slid off a runway during an aborted takeoff Wednesday, causing extensive damage to the aircraft and forcing passengers to exit through emergency doors onto wings and slides at Willow Run Airport. The 109 passengers and seven crew members didn't suffer injuries, according to the Wayne County Airport Authority, which said the airport in Ypsilanti about 15 miles from campus was closed.

Perez: Democrats are in ‘crisis of confidence’

Democrats on Saturday neared the end of a long, competitive battle to choose a new national party chairman who will attempt to turn widespread opposition to President Donald Trump into more election victories. One of the leading candidates, former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, told Democratic National Committee members the party is facing a "crisis of confidence" and a "crisis of relevance" after losing about 1,000 elected posts from Capitol Hill to state legislatures during the last decade, in addition to Hillary Clinton's presidential election loss.

Fitzgerald: Players wrong to shun White House invite

There's a big difference between unity and unison, which we're now seeing illustrated by several misguided Patriots who have indicated they will not be joining their teammates when the squad is formally invited to the White House to be congratulated by President Trump. But sometimes we have a responsibility not to do the things we have a right to do, just because graciousness still matters, or ought to, especially to a team that enjoys such goodwill among its rabid fans.

There is a lot at stake as the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons go head to head in the Super Bowl this weekend in Houston -- and that could include the stewardship of the Department of Education. Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren is comfortable putting her vote against education secretary-designate Betsy DeVos in the hands of Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Only on AP: Falcons worried about handling of painkillers

A string of emails that began in 2010 with the Atlanta Falcons head trainer and reached all the way to owner Arthur Blank showed a franchise worried about its "excessive" reliance on painkillers to treat players and the potential embarrassment that could cause the team and the NFL. One topic raised in the email chain concerned the review by an outside agency that found the team spent $81,000 on prescriptions for medications for players in 2009 - nearly three times the league average.
