PHILADELPHIA: Democrats divided over the future of their party agreed on at least one thing at their national convention in Philadelphia on Monday night: Michelle Obama was a star. The first lady gave a speech in support of a former first lady, presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, and described America as "the greatest country on earth", clashing with Republican Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan and bringing an arena crowd riven by a fierce fight for the nomination to its feet.

Although Hillary Clinton's nomination as party candidate for president was warmly endorsed Monday night by her rival Bernie Sanders and First Lady Michelle Obama, the Democratic Convention's unity motto was undermined by the 20,000 DNC emails whose release by WikiLeaks was attributed to Russian hackers - which compromised the party elite as having campaigned to discredit Sanders. The sense of crisis was exacerbated by Debbie Wasserman Schultz's abrupt removal as party chairwoman, and the boos of protest resounding from some of Bernie's supporters over their leader's endorsement of Clinton.
