Hundreds of city workers and community members went to at San Francisco's City Hall to mourn the death of Mayor Ed Lee and hear acting Mayor London Breed honor Lee. They crowded on a balcony outside the mayor's office on the second floor Tuesday overlooking the building's main floor and swarmed upper floors as Breed gave a short speech honoring Lee as a sweet and humble man who she said never wanted to be a politician.

Man charged in death of Texas trooper

The suspect in the shooting death of a state trooper during a Thanksgiving Day traffic stop in East Texas was charged Friday with capital murder of a law enforcement officer. Dabrett Black, 32, was being held in the Brazos County jail in Bryan, Texas, about 270 miles southwest of Texarkana.

DPS said Allen joined the department in 2002 and was married with three children. Allen was shot and killed before 4 p.m. Thursday during a traffic stop on Interstate 45 near Fairfield, about 90 miles south of Dallas, according to DPS.

Ex-Rep. Hinchey, who pushed to protect the environment, dies

Former U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, a veteran lawmaker known for pressing to protect the environment during a career that spanned from the era of the Love Canal toxic waste site to the recent debate over natural-gas fracking, has died. He was 79. Hinchey, a Democrat, died Wednesday at his home in Saugerties, in the Hudson Valley, his family said in a statement on his Facebook page.

But he died much as he had lived for most of the last half century imprisoned, but still the focus of an endless media circus which seemed to feed him in some twisted way.

Pall of church shooting shrouds Texas town’s Veterans Day ceremony

First responders and law enforcement personnel stood with heads bowed Saturday in Sutherland Springs for a Veterans Day ceremony that also was meant to honor the more than two dozen people killed a block away at a church. About 100 people attended the ceremony outside the town's community center, where a wreath was placed near flags to remember those killed in last weekend's mass shooting, nearly half of whom had ties to the Air Force.
