The Richmond office of Freeman’s auction house will hold preview showings of items from the former Bachrach’s Jewelers and from the inventory of Mariah Robinson Antiques in Carytown in January The items, which include jewelry, watches, silver, paintings, sculpture, furniture and more, are grouped as “The Richmond Collections.” Bachrach’s Jewelers closed in October after 129 years in business.

Boy in remission from cancer helps spread Christmas cheer to kids still fighting

After her son young son, P.J. Moura, battled childhood cancer for three years, Sarah Montgomery realized the thing that made him happy in those days in the hospital was when people brought him toys. Now in remission, P.J., his mother and a group of volunteers – brought together by a Facebook post by Montgomery - came together over the weekend to fill stockings and wrap presents that will be presented to children still battling cancer.

Henry Heimlich, inventor of maneuver to save chocking victims, dies at 96

Heimlich died on Saturday at a hospital in Cincinnati at the age of 96 from complications of a massive heart attack he had on Dec. 12. Heimlich used the maneuver named after him in May to save a fellow resident at a Cincinnati retirement home where he lived, reportedly the first time he had used it to save a person’s life. Heimlich published an article about the maneuver, using abdominal thrusts, in 1974.

Corpus Christi lifts water ban after tests find no corrosive

A nearly four-day ban on drinking the water in Corpus Christi, Texas, was lifted on Sunday after test results showed no contamination due to a chemical leak, the city’s mayor announced.
