Gigabit ‘Reverse Pitch’ kickoff event draws statewide audience

Over 300 people across the state came together via simulcast last night for a RIoT event supporting US Ignite’s national Gigabit Reverse Pitch initiative in North Carolina. Initiated by North Carolina Next Generation Network in partnership with New City Ventures and RIoT, the event kicked off a statewide competition to create transformative, problem-solving applications that leverage ultra-high speed, low latency fiber networks.

UK Parliament to hold inquiry into algorithmic transparency

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee put out a public call for suggestions on subjects it should investigate and one of the three winning pitches came from Stephanie Mathisen, campaigns and policy officer at Sense about Science, who suggested an inquiry into transparency in algorithmic decision-making. In an explanatory editorial, Mathisen explains that algorithmic decision-making is poorly understood and yet widely acclaimed, which sets the stage for a lot of bad outcomes: governments and corporations are under real pressure to adopt these systems, but to yield to vendor insistence that the decisions the systems deliver are “objective” and also not comprehensible by humans .

Newton Robotics hosts STEM night open house

The event started with a demonstration of the robot assembled for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition, called “Steamworks.” Brian Hoskins and Josh Virtell controlled the robot through a laptop, joystick, and video gaming controller on the D-Level Carpet of the high school for all to see.
