As in many of Kerouac’s works, nature was a source of happiness in “Big Sur,” but it also reflected his darker moods. The landscape surrounding the cabin, including the canyon east of the Bixby Creek Bridge, and the ocean were among the natural features that became protagonists in the novel, which reflected shifts in the author’s own psyche.
