This space radio could help track every flight in real time

Washington, Jan 30 – Researchers have developed a reconfigurable radio that could help air traffic controllers see in real-time the location of every plane in the air — even those flying across oceans. To design and develop the new reconfigurable, higher-bandwidth radio, NASA worked with Palm Bay, Florida-based Harris Corporation.

NASA’s fermi discovers the most extreme blazars yet

VIDEO: NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has discovered the five most distant gamma-ray blazars yet known. The light detected by Fermi left these galaxies by the time the universe was two… view more NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has identified the farthest gamma-ray blazars, a type of galaxy whose intense emissions are powered by supersized black holes.

NASA’s fermi sees gamma rays from ‘hidden’ solar flares

VIDEO: On three occasions, NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has detected gamma rays from solar storms on the far side of the sun, emission the Earth-orbiting satellite shouldn’t be able to… view more An international science team says NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has observed high-energy light from solar eruptions located on the far side of the sun, which should block direct light from these events. This apparent paradox is providing solar scientists with a unique tool for exploring how charged particles are accelerated to nearly the speed of light and move across the sun during solar flares.

Taraji P. Henson Shares Message Of Unity In Stunning SAG Awards Speech

NASA unveils spaceship hatch 50 years after fatal Apollo 1 fire

NASA has marked the 50th anniversary of its Moon program’s fatal Apollo launch pad fire with the first public display of the scorched hatch that trapped three astronauts inside their spaceship during a routine pre-launch test. NASA astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee died when thick smoke filled the crew module of the Apollo 1 capsule on January 27, 1967, in what was the first deadly accident in the space agency’s early days.

Out of this world

Two Scottish sites are fighting hard to be the UK’s first designated spaceport but is the idea pie in the sky or will there actually be lift-off? Prestwick Airport in South Ayrshire and Machrihanish, near Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula, have recently stepped up their attempts to move into the space age. They have been liaising with the UK government and the UK Space Agency over the possibility of licences being issued to break out of commercial airspace into orbit.
