Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus is nearly 200 years old, but it feels as fresh as ever; a cautionary tale on the ethics of bioengineering and a heartbreaking story of a creature searching for its identity. Choreographer and Royal Ballet artist-in-residence Liam Scarlett has made a fresh adaptation of the story in a co-commission for the Royal Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet.

With tap dancer extraordinaire Michelle Dorrance, everything old seems new – really new – again. In her company’s program over the weekend, presented by World Music/CRASHarts at the Emerson/Cutler Majestic Theatre, Dorrance created the first half’s “SOUNDspace” in 2012-13 as she was considering her “influences, lineage, legacy.”

Underground music gets scrutiny after deadly Oakland fire

About a week after 36 people died in a fire at an underground music party in Oakland, inspectors acting on a complaint discovered a makeshift nightclub and unpermitted living quarters concealed in a warehouse near Los Angeles International Airport. Authorities searching the drab, two-story building found an illegally constructed dance floor, paired with a bar and DJ booth.
