Venus serves. The Americans leap out to a 30-0 lead and consolidate it with a punishing serve into the body that’s too good for Noskova. A nice moment for the teenager next though as she exchanges a series of fiery forehands with Venus, just 25 years her senior. She wins the point too and we’re soon at deuce. A double fault brings up break point for the Czechs, which Venus saves with a fine serve that Hradecka floats long. Venus hits another double fault – her serve is a little erratic today – but eventually it’s another Williams hold.

Former Wimbledon champions line up on Centre Court to celebrate centenary

Billie Jean King, Roger Federer, Björn Borg and Venus Williams among 26 tennis legends to mark occasion

Wimbledon spectators were treated to appearances by some of the tournament’s legends including Billie Jean King, Roger Federer and Venus Williams on Sunday as Centre Court celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The ceremony featured 26 previous champions as well as a singalong led by Cliff Richard, recreating when he memorably entertained the Centre Court crowd in similar fashion during a lengthy rain delay in 1996.

Cori Gauff, 15, eclipses Venus Williams in Wimbledon first round

• American youngster wins 6-4, 6-4 on Court One
• Glimpse of future as five-time SW19 champion beaten

The 15-year-old American Cori Gauff produced one of the biggest opening-day upsets in Wimbledon history on Monday as she upended five-times champion Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.

The teenager, the youngest player ever to qualify for the main draw, played brilliantly throughout and kept her nerve as she ousted the 39-year-old on Court No 1 in what was her debut performance in a grand slam event.
