Republican who blamed shootings on gay marriage urged to resign

Ohio state representative’s screed against cannabis and liberal ‘snowflakes’ goes too far even for her own party

A Republican state representative in Ohio who blamed “homosexual marriage” and “recreational marijuana” – along with many of Donald Trump’s favourite targets – for gun massacres is facing calls from her own party to resign.

In a Facebook post, Candice Keller, who represents a conservative district near Dayton, where nine people were killed early on Sunday, mused about the causes of mass shootings including: family breakdown and same sex marriage, open borders, sportsmen who disrespect the flag and national anthem, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, a godless culture, and liberal “snowflakes”.

8chan: far-right site linked to shootings resurfaces – and is kicked offline again

Message board enabling hate speech, where El Paso suspect allegedly posted manifesto, struggles to find new host

After being knocked offline Sunday by the internet infrastructure company Cloudflare, the far-right message board 8chan resurfaced hours later using a new online provider.

On Monday morning, 8chan found another service to provide it online protection: Epik.com, which advertises itself as a “non-discriminatory provider” with “a proven commitment to liberty”. Cloudflare finally stopped servicing 8chan after a shooting suspect allegedly posted a white nationalist rant on the site before killing more than 20 people in El Paso.

Trump blames shootings on ‘glorification of violence’ – video

Donald Trump has blamed ‘the glorification of violence’ in a speech that identified video games, the internet and mental illness – but not guns – as the cause of the attacks that left at least 30 dead and 53 injured in less than 24 hours over the weekend.

In his first public remarks on the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, Trump also condemned white supremacy as authorities said they were investigating an anti-Hispanic, anti-immigrant manifesto allegedly tied to the El Paso suspect.

Two mass shootings in US leave 29 dead as Trump faces barrage of criticism

  • 20 killed in El Paso, Texas, and nine killed in Dayton, Ohio
  • US reels from killings as Trump faces criticism over immigration

Donald Trump faced a barrage of criticism on Sunday as the US reeled from a brutal mass shooting in the border city of El Paso, Texas, on Saturday, linked to white nationalism and anti-immigrant hate rhetoric.

A total of 20 people were killed in the majority Latino city, nestled in western Texas on the US-Mexico border, as federal authorities investigated a potential hate crime and local prosecutors charged a 21-year-old white man, Patrick Crusius, with murder and said they would pursue the death penalty.

El Paso loses its ‘safe city’ title – not from migrants, but a white man killing Latinos | Ed Vulliamy

The city, which stands at the fulcrum of the US-Mexico borderlands, was one of the country’s safest, until now

When politicians – especially Donald Trump – ratchet up the rhetoric about perils from Mexico along the southern border of the USA, citizens of El Paso react with indignation – also bewilderment, by recourse to a stark truth: they are much safer than most other Americans.

Until now.

Trump tweets as gun violence and white nationalist terrorism stalk America

Domestic terrorism now results in more deaths than the foreign kind but the president shows no sign of toning down his rhetoric

Two menaces have stalked America throughout its history. One is gun violence. The other is white supremacy. In El Paso, Texas, on Saturday they collided.

A 21-year-old gunman with a hatred of Hispanic immigrants killed 20 people in a shopping mall in the eighth deadliest mass shooting in American history. The suspect is believed to have posted online an anti-immigrant screed that praised the killing of 51 people in Christchurch mosques in New Zealand in March.

8chan: the far-right website linked to the rise in hate crimes

Three attackers in six months allegedly posted their plans on the site in advance. In an exclusive interview, Silicon Valley CEO explains his ‘moral obligation’ to keep 8chan online

The suspect in the massacre that left 51 Muslims dead in Christchurch, New Zealand, allegedly posted a white nationalist screed and link to his Facebook live feed on 8chan, a far-right message board and notorious bastion of hate speech. The suspect in the shooting at a synagogue in Poway, California, that killed one person and injured three, allegedly posted a racist and antisemitic “open letter” on 8chan. And the suspect in Saturday’s attack at a crowded Walmart in El Paso, Texas, which claimed the lives of at least 20 people, is believed to also have posted a white nationalist rant on the platform.

If the connection between the 21-year-old suspect in Saturday’s massacre and the 8chan document is confirmed – and law enforcement sources told NBC News that they are “reasonably confident” that they are linked – then the El Paso attack will mark the third mass shooting in less than six months that was announced in advance on the message board. The first targeted Muslims, the second Jews, and the third appears to have been aimed at killing Latinos.
