Lawyer tells court Blagojevich to appeal prison sentence

Rod Blagojevich's lawyer has notified a federal court that the imprisoned former Illinois governor plans to appeal his 14-year sentence for corruption imposed at a resentencing earlier this month. Leonard Goodman filed the brief notice with U.S. District Court in Chicago Tuesday informing sentencing Judge James Zagel that the 59-year-old Democrat will appeal to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

A court of appeals panel has stayed a ruling that would have allowed those who couldn't get an ID to vote with "reasonable effort" to use an affidavit in November. Wednesday morning a three-judge panel for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals found that "both the district court's decision is likely to be reversed on appeal and that disruption of the state's electoral system in the interim will cause irreparable injury."

Supreme Court won’t rescue Wisconsin abortion law

Handing down its second major abortion action in as many days, the U.S. Supreme Court refused Tuesday to rescue a Wisconsin law restricting abortion clinics and doctors in the state, leaving in place lower court rulings that had struck it down. The unsigned order ends a three-year legal fight and was accompanied Tuesday by another rejection of an appeal by Mississippi that sought to reinstate a similar law requiring abortion doctors to be able to admit patients to nearby hospitals.

Former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle’s sentence upheld by 7th Circuit

The 188-month federal sentence of Jared Fogle, the former Subway pitchman who in 2015 pled guilty to traveling across state lines to have sex with a minor, and conspiracy to distribute and receive child pornography, was upheld Thursday. Fogle argued that he was improperly sentenced based on "things he didn't do or fantasies he may have had," the Indy Star reports.
