In Brief: Goodnight Brothers: Recall affected labeled ham product; Jackson Sumner wins national award

A recall from Johnston County Ham Company in Smithfield only affected one product that carried a Goodnight Brothers label, according to the Boone-based company, but it was not produced by Goodnight Brothers. "The product that is being recalled is a Fully Cooked Country Ham Deli Loaf that carries the Est# 2646," Goodnight said in a Thursday statement.

Patrons at Boone Saloon will have to wait a little longer before they can venture downstairs into the new "barcade." According to Boone building inspector Stacy Miller, the downstairs bar, known as The Game Changer, was incomplete when a final inspection was done, so the restaurant had to file a second permit application.

Boone receives bids on intake construction

Representatives from the town of Boone, engineering firm W.K. Dickson and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development office on June 30 opened sealed bids for construction of the South Fork New River intake project and renovation of the town's water treatment plant. The new intake facility is planned on the South Fork New River in the Brownwood community near the Ashe County border.
