With the general-election season now well underway, prominent statewide Democratic candidates will head to the Mill City on Friday to rally in support of newly named 3rd Congressional District nominee Lori Trahan. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Democratic gubenatorial nominee Jay Gonzalez will headline the rally at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, according to a press release from the Massachusetts Democratic party.

Rufus Gifford, the former U.S. ambassador to Denmark now running to succeed U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, has hired a longtime Tsongas staffer to manage his campaign, hoping the deep in-district experience gives him an edge in a crowded race. Ben Martello, who most recently oversaw management of Tsongas's district offices as executive director, is now serving as campaign manager for Gifford, the candidate announced in a Monday press release.
Niki Tsongas was first elected in 2007, breaking a decades-long streak of male dominance in the state's congressional delegation. No woman had represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House or Senate for 25 years, since Rep. Margaret Heckler had been defeated.
While William Hogan's name is not displayed across a building -- partly because the former chancellor didn't want to be the center of attention and deflected credit -- he certainly laid the foundation for success across campus. Hogan, known as the "Father of UMass Lowell" -- leading the university for 25 years and working there for more than four decades until 2006 -- died last week.
