On a tie-breaking "yes" vote by Mayor Steve Callaway, the Hillsboro City Council narrowly passed a resolution declaring Hillsboro a sanctuary city Tuesday night, March 7. A packed Shirley Huffman Auditorium, monitored on all sides by about 30 Hillsboro Police officers over the course of the meeting, erupted in cheers when Callaway announced at 10:45 p.m. that Resolution 2552 had prevailed.
Oregon House Democrats are taking Republicans to task over an ad in a contentious Hillsboro race that asked voters to call the Democratic candidate on her home phone and share their thoughts about a $3 billion corporate tax measure. An ad posted on Facebook by the campaign for Republican Dan Mason says Washington County has been hurt by "Salem's failed economic policies" and implies that Democrat Janeen Sollman supports Measure 97. The measure, which will be on the ballot in November, would charge certain C corporations a 2.5 percent tax on their gross annual sales in Oregon above $25 million.
