Senator joins calls to stop sexual violence at US Merchant Marine Academy
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, on Tuesday proposed that cadets at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy be provided with satellite phones when they train for a year at sea so they can quickly report sexual harassment or assault. The senator added her name to a list of public officials alarmed by reports of widespread sexual misconduct at the little-known federal school that trains sailors to work in the federal government and on commercial ships.
MARAD Reauthorization Bill Passes Senate
June 29, the U.S. Senate passed bipartisan legislation authored by U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Deb Fischer to reauthorize the Maritime Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation. The bill recognizes the important role of America's maritime transportation system and takes critical steps to improve the management of MARAD.

Retired U.S. astronaut and University of Tennessee Space Institute graduate Scott Kelly will speak at the school's "Welcome Week Life of Mind" celebration.
