Brian Sandoval's State of the State address included a new announcement about Tesla Motors' plans to expand its operations in northern Nevada with more than 500 additional jobs. Sandoval told lawmakers during a joint session in Carson City Tuesday night that Tesla will expand the factory manufacturing lithium-ion batteries to power its electric cars to include the production of electric motors and gearboxes for its next car, the Model 3. Tesla currently has more than 1,000 full-time employees and 2,000 construction workers on site at the 5 million-square-foot "gigafactory" along U.S. Interstate 80 east of Reno-Sparks.

The Sierra Front Interagency Fire Center reported Friday night the fire was continuing to burn out of control with zero containment in the Washoe Valley about 8 miles north of Carson City. It broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Friday in an area where a controlled burn was conducted earlier this week.

Carson City Parks and Recreation has opened its new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center and is seeking volunteers to help with various assignments. CCPR needs volunteers to help with the front desk, accept phone calls, monitor facility during programs/special events and maintain cleanliness of the facility.
The Justice Department announced Thursday that Carson City, Nevada, rental property owners Betty Brinson and Hughston Brinson have agreed to pay $36,000 to resolve allegations that they discriminated against families with children in violation of the Fair Housing Act . The lawsuit alleged that the Brinsons discriminated against families with children by placing a series of advertisements for a single-family rental home in the local newspaper that indicated a preference for adult tenants and refusing to rent the home to a family with three children because they did not want children living at the property.
The changes mean some property owners may be able to drop flood insurance if their area is no longer designated a flood hazard. "It takes some out of a floodplain and puts some in, but more are coming out than going in," said Robb Fellows, senior project manager, stormwater.
