20,000 pounds of potatoes sent to Harvey victims

Hundreds of volunteers from across Maryland worked side-by-side to harvest more than 20,000 pounds of potatoes Saturday afternoon to directly support the ongoing hurricane recovery effort in Texas. Volunteers who represent a variety of groups and organizations, including schools, churches, businesses, even the US Coast Guard began harvesting the potatoes around 9 a.m. At 3 p.m. a tractor-trailer was loaded with 400 bags of potatoes, equating to more than 20,000 pounds for Hurricane Harvey relief.

Oil spill closes part of Chicago River, south of the city

Part of the Chicago River, south of the third largest city in the United States, was closed on Thursday due to an oil spill, the source of which is unknown, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The U.S. Coast Guard shut down access to Bubbly Creek, a waterway extending from the south branch of the Chicago River, to people and vessels after report of the oil spill, the guard said in a statement.
