Many shades of the U.S. at war

I'm just back from visiting all of our key air bases in Iraq, Afghanistan and along the Persian Gulf, and I find myself wrestling with two stark contrasts: the contrast between what is happening there in the air and what is happening on the ground, and the contrast between the decency of the U.S. military personnel fighting this war and how unworthy Donald Trump - who has become our divider in chief - is to be their commander in chief. The first contrast was summed up in two wall-size digital maps at our Kuwait-based command center for the war on ISIS.

Connecticut eyes on, hearts out to Houston

All eyes were on Houston this week, and Connecticut hearts went out to the thousands of Texans displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The "Flying Yankees," otherwise known as the 103rd Airlift Wing, took off for Texas in a C-130 Hercules cargo plane to help bring emergency supplies, and the U.S. Coast Guard sent a dozen reservists from the Long Island Sound sector to help.

Old Ironsides’ reopens for public visits

For the first time in more than two years -- and just in time for Labor Day weekend -- visitors to the Charlestown Navy Yard can tour the USS Constitution, or "Old Ironsides," again. The world's oldest commissioned warship opened to the public Saturday morning after undergoing restoration work including the replacement of 100 hullplanks and the installation of 2,200 new copper sheets.

Friends, family welcome Pine Island sailor back home

U.S. Air Force Probes Midair Scrapes of Planes by Boeing Fuel Tankers

The U.S. Air Force is investigating multiple instances of scrapes on aircraft caused during mid-air refueling performed by So far, the damage caused by the fuel probe that connects the tanker with other aircraft has been minor, according to a service statement and program documents. But it's worrying enough that the Air Force issued a top-level "Category One" deficiency report on May 1 after it discovered the damage during post-test flight analysis of video and data.

US, South Korea fly bombers over Korean Peninsula

The US and South Korea have staged a joint show of force over the Korean Peninsula, two days after North Korea fired a missile over Japan. Two US B-1B bombers, four South Korean F-15 fighter jets and four US F-35B fighter jets took part in the joint US-South Korean exercise, an official with the South Korean Air Force told CNN.

Britain's leading shipbuilding bosses are scheduled to meet with the ruling Conservative party in September to be briefed on the broad outline for a new class of light frigates for the Royal Navy. Babcock International, BAE Systems, BMT Defence Services and a small design consultancy known as Stellar Systems are expected to submit designs for the Type 31 light frigate program, and it is believed that London wants the first of the vessels to be operational in time to replace the Type 23 frigate HMS Argyll which is scheduled for decommissioning in 2023.

The Coast Guard suspended their search, Tuesday, for two missing fishermen overdue in Lake Erie since Monday after rescuing one. Just after 12:30 p.m., a Royal Canadian Air Force C-130 from Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, spotted a man clinging to a capsized vessel about 15 nautical miles northeast of Cleveland.
