Registration for the 2017 BNP Paribas Challenge, the singles pre-qualifying event for the BNP Paribas Open, begins today and will run through February 17. The Challenge is slated for February 27 – March 4 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with one male and one female participant advancing to the qualifying draw of the 2017 BNP Paribas Open. First through quarterfinal round matches will be best of three sets with a 10-point match tiebreak played for the third set, while semifinal and final matches will be best of three sets.

Virat Kohli has taken over from Mahendra Singh Dhoni as India’s limited-overs captain, becoming his country’s skipper in all three formats of the game, the Indian cricket board said on Friday. Dhoni has been named as wicket-keeper in the squads for three one-dayers and three Twenty20 Internationals against England, beginning on January 15. White Sox claim OF Garcia; Coats DFA’d

The White Sox claimed outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from the Pirates on Friday and designated outfielder Jason Coats for assignment. Garcia was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Dec. 31 after spending all season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where the 24-year-old hit .245 with 30 doubles, six home runs and 43 RBIs.
