Chelmsford’s Hohenstein is D1 hurdles champion

Chelmsford High’s Kristen Hohenstein and Acton-Boxboro’s Samantha Friborg were crowned state champions at Saturday’s MIAA Division 1 track-and-field meet held at the Reggie Lewis Center. Hohenstein captured the 55-meter hurdles in 8.6 seconds and Friborg won the 600 meters in 1:33.69, which broke a meet record previously set in 2013.

High school transgender wrestler wins Texas regional title

A 17-year-old Dallas-area high school transgender wrestler who is transitioning from female to male has won a girls regional championship after a female opponent forfeited the match. Mack Beggs, a Euless Trinity High School junior who is undefeated this wrestling season, hugged losing opponent Madeline Rocha, from Coppell, on the victory stand Saturday after their match for the 110-pound Class 6A Region 2 championship never took place when Rocha declined to wrestle.

Charleston, Ill.-Jamal Boma kept his best performances for the last week of the regular season as the William Penn track and field teams competed at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special. Boma not only won the 3,000 and 5,000-meter run competitions, but did so with school record-breaking and, more importantly, national-qualifying times.

In the win, Central broke the school single game record for most 3-pointers made with 24, squashing the previous record of 20. The Dutch were led offensively by junior forward Kyle Smith with 17 points including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, senior forward Colby Taylor had 12 points and six rebounds, senior forward Austin Glawe had 12 points including 4-of-6 from 3, senior guard Pete Walker had 10 points and six rebounds and junior forward Malik Wildermuth had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench.

North Dakota St tops Western Illinois 100-91 in 2OT

Carlin Dupree scored six of his season-high 22 points in the second overtime and North Dakota State remained tied for the Summit League lead with a 100-91 win over eighth-place Western Illinois on Saturday. Dupree’s free throws 38 seconds into the second overtime made it 89-87 and the Bison never trailed thereafter.

Easton not yet closing in on new football coach

The search for Easton Area High School ‘s next football coach is well underway, but Steve Shiffert’s successor will not be put up for approval at Tuesday’s school board meeting, athletic director Jim Pokrivsak said Saturday. While two rounds of interviews have been done so far, and some anticipated the process might be wrapped up by Tuesday, the search committee has not made any decisions just yet.

Freshman Peyton Bell placed fourth and senior Jennifer Turner finished eighth in singles while Bell and Nathan Parrott were ninth and Turner and Savannah Shirley were 10th in doubles for the Cumberland bowling teams Friday at the Mid-South Conference Championships. The bowling squads take part in the team portion of the conference tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Southern Lanes in Bowling Green.
