Flyers’ Konecny benched; Pronger returning to ice

In a surprising move, speedy rookie left winger Travis Konecny, who had two assists in Wednesday’s 6-3 loss in St. Louis, was benched Friday against San Jose. It was the first benching of the season for Konecny, who has four goals, 14 assists, 18 points, and a minus-2 rating in 37 games.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had a season full of headlines, and it continued with a team accolade on Friday. Zach LaVine added 24 points and Shabazz Muhammad had 22 points in 18 minutes off the bench for the Wolves, who shot 55.8 percent from the field and hit 13 of 25 3-pointers.

Korver, Howard lead Hawks past Pistons, 105-98

Paul Millsap scored 26 points and Kyle Korver added a season-high 22 on Friday night to lead Atlanta to a 105-98 victory over the Detroit Pistons, helping the Hawks forget about the first time these teams met here four weeks ago. Detroit walloped Atlanta 121-85 on Dec. 2 in Philips Arena, but after Korver made three consecutive free throws to open the second quarter and break a 19-all tie, the Hawks never again trailed nor were even tied.

Wild, Blue Jackets to make win-streak history Saturday

When the Wild hosts the Blue Jackets today, it will be the first time in North America’s four major pro sports that teams with concurrent winning streaks of at least 12 games meet, the Elias Sports Bureau says. The Wild has won a team-record 12 straight games and is a franchise-best 13-0-1 in its past 14. The Blue Jackets have a franchise-record 14-game winning streak, tied for fourth longest in NHL history, that started with a 5-1 win against the Lightning on Nov. 29. The previous best winning-streak matchup was 11 versus 11 when the Lakers visited the Trail Blazers on Feb. 29, 2000.

Jose Mourinho has been reluctant to give Memphis Depay the chance to resurrect his Manchester United career because he is expecting him to leave in January. The 22-year-old midfielder arrived at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015 after finishing the previous season as the top scorer in the Eredivisie but, despite a reunion with his former national manager Louis van Gaal, Depay failed to nail down a regular spot and has fallen even further down the pecking order under Mourinho.
