Tom Perez elected new DNC chairman, beating out Rep. Keith Ellison

Top Democrats on Saturday chose former Secretary of Labor Tom Perez to lead the party in its opposition to the agenda of President Donald Trump. It was a tight race for the DNC chair, though, as it went to a second ballot as Perez only got 213.5 votes during the first ballot.

The Democrats have selected their new chair and it was an upset. Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez was chosen over Keith Ellison in a very tight battle where Perez received 235 votes and Ellison got 200.

The first Latino appointed to the position of DNC chair, Perez beat fellow front-runner Keith Ellison, a representative from Minnesota, by 35 votes.
