Volcanic gases prompt evacuation of stragglers in Hawaii

Police went door-to-door in Hawaii to roust residents near two new volcanic vents emitting dangerous gases in areas where lava has poured into streets and backyards for the past week. Authorities had ordered nearly 2,000 residents to leave the two communities in the mostly rural district of Puna on Hawaii's Big Island last Thursday.

Hawaii volcano destroys 9 homes, spews lava 200 feet upward

The Kilauea volcano sent more lava into Hawaii communities Friday, May 4, 2018, a day after forcing more than 1,500 people to flee from their mountainside homes, and authorities detected high levels of sulfur gas that could threaten the elderly and people with breathing problems.

Homes are seen burning in light of the Kilauea eruption.

The announcement came Thursday and frees up federal aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for residents whose homes have been lost or damaged in light of the ongoing eruption. Residents whose primary homes were destroyed or whose homes are inaccessible due to the lava flow, should register at the newly established FEMA Disaster Relief Center for possible assistance.
