Ohio Adopts Preemption Legislation, Blocking Local Minimum Wage Hikes …

On Monday, December 19, 2016, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed Senate Bill 331 , which prohibits municipalities and other political subdivisions from raising the minimum wage beyond Ohio's state minimum wage rate, currently set at $8.10 an hour . The bill appears to be a direct reaction to two separate labor union-backed local initiatives: Cleveland's "Fight for 15" movement, which was a failed effort to aggressively increase Cleveland's minimum wage to $15 an hour; and Youngstown's "Part-Time Bill of Rights" proposal, which was a separate attempt to provide part-time workers with certain employment benefits, including paid time off and advanced notice of work schedules.

Trump wins Electoral College vote; a few electors break ranks

Republican Donald Trump prevailed in U.S. Electoral College voting on Monday to officially win election as the next president, easily dashing a long-shot push by a small movement of detractors to try to block him from gaining the White House. Trump, who is set to take office on Jan. 20, garnered more than the 270 electoral votes required to win, even as at least half a dozen U.S. electors broke with tradition to vote against their own state's directives, the largest number of "faithless electors" seen in more than a century.

Revolt fizzles as Trump easily wins Electoral College vote

Despite weeks of lobbying and a day of protests, President-elect Donald Trump won all but two of the Electoral College votes he claimed on Election Day, ensuring he will become America's 45th president. All 538 electors met in state capitals across the country Monday to cast their votes.

Ohio Senators Vote To Advance Unemployment Insurance Bill

Both Ohio senators voted Tuesday to move ahead with debate on a three-month, $6.4 billion extension of emergency unemployment insurance. Around 40,000 Ohio residents saw their insurance cut off at the end of December after congressional Republicans left the program out of a last-minute budget deal, and another 128,000 stand to get cut off sometime in 2014.

Electors stick to Trump script

They convened amid unusual scrutiny, widespread protests and rafts of speculation about efforts to alter the outcome, but, in the end, the nation's 538 presidential electors mostly stuck to the script Monday, formally sealing Donald Trump's victory with 304 votes in the Electoral College, well above what he needed to capture the White House. After all the efforts to lobby Republican electors to desert Trump, only two did - a pair from Texas, one of whom voted for former Rep. Ron Paul and the other for Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

John Glenn lies in honor at Ohio capitol for public goodbye

John Glenn's home state and the nation began saying goodbye to the beloved astronaut Friday starting with a public viewing of his flag-draped casket inside Ohio's Statehouse rotunda. Politicians, including Secretary of State John Kerry, and ordinary citizens from across the country paid their respects to the first American to orbit Earth as a somber Marine honor guard kept watch.

US elector demands briefing on Russia election interference

Weeks after Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election to Donald Trump, some of her loyal supporters have not given up hope. Clay Pell, a vocal supporter of the Democrat during her long campaign and one of the 538 members of the Electoral College, said the process has been tarnished by Russian interference.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich vetoes ‘heartbeat’ abortion bill, signs 20-week ban

Gov. John Kasich on Tuesday used his line-item veto authority to strike down the so-called "heartbeat bill" legislation that would have created the most restrictive abortion law in the nation. At the same time, Kasich signed into law a separate piece of legislation, SB 127, that forbids abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, a move that certainly will prompt court challenges.

Ohio governor OKs 20-week abortion ban, nixes heartbeat bill

Republican Gov. John Kasich signed a bill Tuesday imposing a 20-week abortion ban while vetoing stricter provisions in a separate measure that would have barred the procedure at the first detectable fetal heartbeat. The so-called heartbeat bill would have prohibited most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy - or before many women know they are pregnant.

Stop Trying to Convince Trump Electors Not to Vote for Trump; It Will …

A group of people calling themselves "Hamilton Electors" got together after the election and started agitating for Trump's Presidential Electors not to vote for him, but to instead vote for Hillary Clinton. Simply writing that down explicitly illuminates how stupid that is - "Trump Electors" are chosen by the Republican Parties within the various states with the express purpose of voting for Trump - and asking them to support Hillary is madness.
