After Amtrak derailments, Booker and Menendez seek to block Trump’s transit cuts

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker asked leaders of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee overseeing transportation to ensure federal funding for Amtrak and the Gateway Tunnel project. Their letter to U.S. Sens. Susan Collins , the subcommittee chairwoman, and Jack Reed , the ranking Democrat, came after Amtrak acknowledged responsibility for two recent derailments that tied up NJ Transit train traffic for days.

President Barack Obama took a trip to Louisiana in the midst of the recent flood crisis. Louisiana has had history of some of the nation's worst disasters over the last 15 years and disaster strikes again with the recent flood in Baton Rouge, an estimated 146,156 homes, or 41.5 percent, were hurt by the flooding.

Lawrence School District receives more than $1M for Sandy repairs

The Lawrence Union Free School District received over $1 million in addition to its initial $2.6 million to continue to repair damages from Hurricane Sandy.
