Not even Hoover could have cleaned up this FBI mess

For decades after 1924 the ominous shadow of J. Edgar Hoover loomed almost menacingly over the federal government, from Capitol Hill to the White House. The persnickety, demanding young lawyer who had been given charge of an ineffectual, lethargic Bureau of Investigation in the Justice Department was determined to build the premier law enforcement agency in the country.

I think you make yourself a victim almost every single day

This is a good piece by Adam Serwer. And what he's saying about the FBI is true of all of institutions, especially the media: Republicans, insulated from the potential backlash by the very "law and order" voters who put them in office, are willing to attack the FBI publicly as a covert political tool of Democrats in a way that the opposition party simply is not.

President Donald Trump has met with a top Justice Department official to review a classified Democratic memo on the Russia investigation, less than a week after he brushed aside objections from the same agency over releasing a Republican account. The vote will send the 10-page Democratic memo to the White House as soon as Monday night, giving Trump until Friday to decide whether to allow its release. If he declines, after approving the release of the Republican memo despite strong objections by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, it could set up an angry dispute pitting the White House and many of Trump's fellow Republicans in Congress against Democrats, law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

James Comey: Connecting the Dots

If Rep. Trey Gowdy, R- S.C., really believes the House Intelligence Committee's FISA memo does not vindicate President Trump, then he must also believe it does not answer the question of when Donald Trump stopped beating Melania. Gowdy made that claim , among others, in a series of tweets on Friday and in a "Face the Nation" interview on Sunday: Rep. Trey Gowdy said the release of the controversial FISA memo by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee does not discredit Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
