Increase in lawsuits on sex-based workplace harassment

More than 3,500 federal civil lawsuits related to harassment in the workplace have been filed so far this year, an increase over 2016, according to Lex Machina, a Menlo Park analytics firm that tracks litigation. Federal data show that the number of sex-based-harassment complaints filed in 2016 increased from the prior year.

Menlo Park: Immigrant protection with ‘teeth’ sought

A local resident pushing for Menlo Park to create an ordinance to protect its undocumented immigrant population is hopeful the new mayor will hold a hearing on the idea in January. Jen Mazzon, who introduced the proposal after Donald Trump became president-elect and launched a website that features a sample ordinance, community survey and regular updates, on Wednesday said she was writing a letter to Mayor Kirsten Keith, asking her to schedule a hearing on an ordinance next month.

As elections officials worked to wrap up ballot counts across San Mateo and Santa Clara counties following Tuesday's election, 24th District Assembly candidate Vicki Veenker appears to have clinched second place in one of the state's most contested elections. Menlo Park Councilman Peter Ohtaki and Veenker were initially neck and neck for runner-up in the open primary wherein eight sought to replace Assemblyman Rich Gordon, D-Menlo Park, who is being termed out.
