Layton Richards, 29, sentenced to eight months in prison for string of thefts in Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex

A thief has been jailed for eight months after being found guilty of shoplifting almost 800 Cadbury Creme Eggs over a three-month period.

Layton Richards, 29, had been charged with 24 shoplifting offences between 6 January and 18 April this year, with Hampshire and Isle of Wight constabulary accusing him of stealing as many as 798 of the confectionery items.

The death of a 17-year-old student who got into difficulty in the sea during a college trip in West Sussex has been described as a “tragic accident” by his college principal.

Emergency services received a call of concern for the teenager’s welfare in the water at a beach in West Wittering, near Chichester, at about 1pm on Tuesday.

A bomb squad had to be called in to a Conservative candidate’s constituency office after he said he received a suspicious package.

Sir Jeremy Quin, a former defence minister and the Tory candidate for the Horsham constituency, received the package at his West Sussex office. Bomb disposal experts were called in to investigate after a decision by Sussex police.

Storm Kathleen: rescue operations as River Arun overflows in West Sussex

Emergency services dealing with incidents in Littlehampton and ‘severe flooding’ at a holiday park

The River Arun has overflowed in West Sussex with rescue operations under way in the seaside town of Littlehampton and warnings of severe flood waters as a result of Storm Kathleen.

“Our crews are supporting rescue operations in Littlehampton near Ferry Road and Rope Walk where the River Arun has burst its banks, leading to severe flooding,” West Sussex fire and rescue service said on X.
