The first week of elections filings in the Twin Counties was all about incumbents. With only a couple of exceptions, all the candidates who tossed their hats into the ring are already holding the office for which they seek.
That's the uphill battle Republican challenger H. Powell Dew Jr. of Stantonsburg has to climb in his attempt to upset longtime incumbent U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, a Democrat, in the race for the 1st Congressional District seat in Tuesday's election. Dew, a pastor who sits on the Stantonsburg Town Council, said from talking to his legion of supporters, he feels a change in District 1 is needed.
A bill passed by the the U.S. House this week would help victims of forced sterilization programs from being hurt again should they receive compensation from state governments for the wrongs done to them, said U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, who introduced the legislation last year. "This helps address something that is really a horrible part of our history in North Carolina and a lot of other states," McHenry said.
