The quiet race for South Whidbey's state representative seat just got a bit more interesting with the emergence of a third challenger. Scott Chaplin, a Langley Democrat, was recognized by the state last week, Oct. 18, as a write-in candidate for position 1 in the 10th Legislative District.
The lone suspect held in the killing of five people at a Washington state mall will be arraigned Monday and authorities are working steadily to nail down a motive, a state patrol spokesman said Sunday. Arcan Cetin, 20, is facing five counts of first-degree murder, according to Skagit County jail records.
The only person fired in connection with a young man's death inside the Island County jail has returned to work. An arbitrator ruled last month that Island County Sheriff Mark Brown did not have just cause to terminate Pamela McCarty from her job as lieutenant in the jail.
