But in his acclaimed new opera, , inspired by the scabrous film by Luis Bunuel, he returns to the territory he marked out in his first opera, "Powder Her Face": skewering the sexual and political assumptions of the upper class.

The English choreographer Matthew Bourne is known for ballets that are based on popular tales or movies; that pulsate with crime and passion; that transpire on shifting planes of reality; that incorporate big, crazy dance parties and small, nastily observed manners; and that generally end with the boy's not getting the girl, or the boy. Now Bourne has done it again, God bless him! His new ballet is "The Red Shoes" , and the story, basically, is that of the famous 1948 movie by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

23 receive ‘genius grants’ from MacArthur Foundation

A director who has taken opera from the concert hall to the streets of Los Angeles and an organizer who helped put a human face on the plight of young undocumented immigrants are among this year's MacArthur fellows and recipients of the so-called "genius" grants. The Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation on Wednesday announced the 23 fellows, who each receive $625,000 over five years to spend any way they choose.

Clinton book has sold more than 300,000 copies new

Clinton's book about her stunning loss in 2016 to Donald Trump sold more than 300,000 copies in the combined formats of hardcover, e-book and audio, Simon & Schuster told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The book's hardcover sales of 168,000 was the highest opening for any nonfiction release in five years, according to NPD BookScan, which tracks around 85 percent of retail print sales.
