Shannon Kula, a Farmington resident and longtime U.S. Senate employee, filed paperwork Wednesday with the Federal Elections Commission to run for Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty's soon-to-be vacant seat. Kula was employed most recently as director of the Women's Leadership Center at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford.
With just over two months before the party convention, six Democrats angling to be the front-runner argued over the future of Connecticut on and who's best-qualified to lead the state Thursday night. While Republican candidates for governor have been grappling on televised stages in the run-up to the May convention, Democratic hopefuls have been meeting in smaller, more-intimate gatherings around the state to explain their visions for the future of Connecticut.
The seven-member school board is currently run by a Democrat majority. Current Democrat board of education chair Mark Overmyer-Velazquez and board member Tammy Exum are not seeking re-election.
Jonathan Harris, who left his job as state Consumper Protection Commissioner on Wednesday, will run for statewide office next year. The West Hartford resident is a former state senator and was head of the state Democratic Party when Gov. Dannel P. Malloy won re-election in 2014.
