School district to build preschool
With the construction of a new preschool, the Cedar Ridge School District aims to strengthen kindergarten readiness in the district's young students. "It's the foundation of everything we do," Superintendent Andy Ashley said of preschool education.

A Louisiana mother says her 8-year-old son was injured when he tried to protect his 4-year-old sister during an after-school altercation in which other children hurled racial insults before slamming the boy on the ground. Alana Jackson said her son, Jordan, who is black, was playing with his sister one day earlier this month on a playground at Spanish Lake Primary School in Geismar, near Baton Rouge, according to the Gonzales Weekly Citizen .

Massachusetts has been as successful as any state in the nation in training workers for jobs in STEM fields - science, technology, engineering and math - but the state's employers still can't find enough employees to hire.  Despite ranking at or near the top of most STEM education metrics, Gov. Charlie Baker this week declared that the state's efforts to train workers for STEM jobs and put them to work "clearly is not enough."

Court rejects appeal by parents of Pittston Area student
The U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday rejected an appeal by the parents of a Pittston Area School District student who was berated by a teacher using what a judge termed "highly inappropriate and unprofessional" language. U.S. District Judge Malachy E. Mannion ruled last year that the teacher, Kelli Diaz - who is still a social studies teacher who uses the married name Kelli Pavalonis - was wrong in asking a student identified only as A.H. if he had Tourette syndrome and in telling him to "shut up" and that she was "not the only teacher who can't stand you."
