State, feds want meeting on Pilgrim safety

PLYMOUTH  - State and federal officials are calling on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to hold a public meeting to answer questions on the safety of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant.  The letter, which was sent Wednesday , was signed by Gov. Charlie Baker, Attorney General Maura Healey, Senator Edward Markey and the entire state Congressional delegation, Senate President Stan Rosenberg and legislators from Plymouth, Cape Cod and the islands, They call on the commission to communicate directly with the public about the safety of the nuclear power plant and provide details about recent shutdowns at a meeting in Massachusetts..   "The NRC has an obligation to address the operation of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant and the increased public concerns that continue to plague the plant at a time when it should be showing significant improvements," Healey said in a ... France opened a $5.3 million half-mile long "solar highway" Tuesday as part of a plan to close a third of its nuclear reactors in favor of turning 620 miles of road into solar panels. Only about 2,000 cars use the road a day, but it is far from certain that the panels can take even that modest use.

A nuke waste train to Yucca could pass near Trump’s L.V. hotel

President-elect Donald Trump hasn't said whether he supports or opposes the Yucca Mountain disposal site, but a possible train route to haul radioactive waste from nuclear power plants could come within a half-mile of his Las Vegas hotel. Robert Halstead, executive director of the Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects, said Friday the Trump hotel is within "800 meters of influence" of the railroad route that could carry more than 77,000 tons of high-level nuclear waste to the site about 90 miles from Las Vegas.
