Travis 75th: 349th AMW’s history includes military, civilian heroics

It holds a United States Postal Service citation for getting the mail through to Eureka in Humboldt County, during the "1,000-year flood" of December 1964. With the possible exception of David Grant Medical Center, the 349th is the oldest continuously existing unit stationed at Travis Air Force Base.

Travis has seen a lot of squadrons and commands come and go since it was opened during World War II as a transport base, transitioned to a Strategic Air Command Base during the Cold War and then shifted back to an air mobility base. Travis opened its most-recent half-decade with significant base improvements and an ongoing high operations tempo supporting American operations around the world. Its capabilities took a large jump forward in March 2013 when the base opened up its reconstructed runway and adjacent landing zone, which not only gave Travis one of the best runways in the Air Force, but was also a model of recycling.
