Why does the Waco City Council waste tax-paying dollars to keep these old "yes men" in office in District 1? I attended both interview sessions of the candidates to succeed Councilman Wilbert Austin and, let me tell you, the difference between the candidates over 60 years old and the younger ones was like night and day. I was literally sleeping through most of the interviews because they were boring as hell.

From February 28 to April 19 of 1993, the Federal Bureau of Investigation besieged a compound in Waco, Texas, owned and occupied by the Branch Davidians. Prior to the siege, the leader of the radical Christian sect, David Koresh, had been suspected of sexually abusing girls as young as 10 and of violating certain firearm restrictions.

Longview power restored, SWEPCO says

A number of Longview residents reported that their power had been flickering intermittently on Monday evening. Karen Wissing, SWEPCO spokesperson, said that the company began working on the issue at about 6:23 p.m. Wissing said at 9:20 that there were 20 troublemen investigating the problem, and they had narrowed it down to an issue at a substation in North Longview.

136,000 registered in McLennan County as voting starts Monday

If the phone calls flooding the McLennan County Elections Office are any indication, there may be a line of registered voters Monday waiting for the doors to open to be first to cast a ballot in the Nov. 8 joint general election, Elections Administrator Kathy Van Wolfe said. With 136,036 registered McLennan County voters, area leaders are pushing the message to vote early.

Waco-area news briefs: Oct. 2, 2016

The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce will host a State of the Nation luncheon featuring Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, at noon Oct. 12 at the Baylor Club in McLane Stadium, 1001 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, R-College Station, and Rob Enstrom, senior vice president and the national political director at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will join Cruz for a panel discussion about matters pertinent to Central Texas. Cost is $50 for individual tickets or $500 for tables for 10 people.
