McLennan County Republican Party hosts its second annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner featuring Col. Allen B. West, 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at Knox Hall in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, 100 Texas Ranger Trail. A reception for hosts and sponsors precedes the event from 5-6:30 p.m.
When it comes to asking for money beyond their budget, a department head's best bet is to be with the McLennan County Sheriff's Office. Or at least that's how some members of the commissioners court feel, acknowledging leniency is given to the sheriff's office because residents want to keep the crime rate down.
The local party faithful wrapped up their get-out-and-vote efforts Monday ahead of a nail-biter of a presidential election on Tuesday. Local Republicans tried to smooth over the intraparty turmoil over their candidate, Donald Trump, and show a unified front against Hillary Clinton.
But with this year's heated national election, their role is now part of a fresh narrative of accountability. Watchers are independent citizens appointed to observe the conduct of the election.
A number of Longview residents reported that their power had been flickering intermittently on Monday evening. Karen Wissing, SWEPCO spokesperson, said that the company began working on the issue at about 6:23 p.m. Wissing said at 9:20 that there were 20 troublemen investigating the problem, and they had narrowed it down to an issue at a substation in North Longview.
While thousands of voters in McLennan County participated in early voting on Monday, others do not plan to vote at all. As of Monday night, a total of 8,153 people had voted by mail and in person in McLennan County.
If the phone calls flooding the McLennan County Elections Office are any indication, there may be a line of registered voters Monday waiting for the doors to open to be first to cast a ballot in the Nov. 8 joint general election, Elections Administrator Kathy Van Wolfe said. With 136,036 registered McLennan County voters, area leaders are pushing the message to vote early.
