Vallejo’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program survives

The Vallejo City Unified School District came "this close" to losing its 45-year-old Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program for lack of interest, but signed up the required number of students just under the wire. Until about two weeks ago, there were some 80 students enrolled in the Jesse Bethel High School program, which needs at least 100, officials said.

Thompson asks military installations be renamed

Washington >> Mike Thompson , Vallejo's representative in Congress, has submitted a letter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis urging him to begin the process of renaming military installations across the country that are named for Confederate figures, Thompson's office announced Monday. The letter is co-signed by 21 other members of Congress, including House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith .

Vallejo lifts shelter-in-place order, sheen found on water

Authorities scrambled Wednesday to contain and clean up a leak on the San Pablo Bay caused by an oil tanker berthed at a marine terminal belonging to the Phillips 66 refinery. The leak left two sheens on the bay, including one just over a mile long by 40 yards wide on the water in the northern San Pablo Bay area, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, the lead agency.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton will be back in the Bay Area on Sunday, making stops in Vallejo and Sacramento in a last-ditch effort to sew up support before California's primary on Tuesday.
