Inspectors who visited Washington state's largest psychiatric hospital found that safety problems that thrust the facility into the national spotlight after the escape of two dangerous patients a year ago persist, including neglected patients. And a survey of Western State Hospital staff, conducted as part of federal oversight in December and January, found that administrators make decisions that "adversely affect patient safety" and there was a lack of trained or qualified staff, fear of retaliation from managers and too much focus on bureaucracy over staff safety.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the roughly 1.5-mile segment of I-5 from state Highway 500 down to the state line during peak traffic hours is the most congested segment of road in the entire state. "About 89 percent of crashes on I-5 are due to congestion," said Dennis Mitchell, Region 1 traffic engineer for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Democrats look to revise party rules that some say exclude transgender people

As protections for transgender people become a topic of intense debate in Washington state and nationwide, Democrats are asking themselves how well they can fight for the rights of those individuals when their party's rules fail to recognize they exist. Several proposals up for a vote Saturday at the Washington State Democratic Convention in Tacoma would amend party rules that require equal numbers of men and women to serve as delegates and in leadership roles, following the voicing of concerns that the male-female quotas exclude people who don't identify as either.
