After more than four decades, the March for Life has become a familiar ritual in Washington. No matter the weather, thousands of abortion opponents gather every year on the National Mall, many wearing matching hats or scarves from their school or church groups, and listen to speeches from social conservatives in Congress before marching to the Supreme Court.
As President Donald Trump prepares to name a successor to Justice Antonin Scalia, the conventional wisdom is that the choice will not change the liberal-conservative balance on the court. After all, this argument goes, if Trump chooses any of the names on his previously published list, the court and the country will simply be swapping one conservative justice for another.
Vice President Mike Pence told the crowd at the March for Life that anti-abortion policies are a top priority of the new administration, and President Donald Trump tweeted that the rally had his "full support." The March for Life is held every year in Washington to mark the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.
"When, in writing for the majority of the Court, I adopt a general rule, and say, 'This is the basis of our decision,'" the late Justice Antonin Scalia once warned, " I not only constrain lower courts, I constrain myself as well ." On Wednesday, the conservative Civitas Institute published an article denouncing efforts to establish a nonpartisan redistricting commission -instead of letting self-interested lawmakers pick their own voters, as currently happens-as a "fantasy" pushed by leftists. The article, echoing comments from state Representative David Lewis, R-Harnett, argues that partisanship is baked into the very cake of redistricting and altering the process would dilute voters' power.
