Congress returns as Trump pressures Democrats ahead of funding deadline

With a deadline looming this week to avert a U.S. government shutdown, Congress returns to work on Monday as President Donald Trump leans on Democrats to include funding for his promised border wall with Mexico in spending legislation. The Republican president took to Twitter on Sunday to warn Democrats that the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, could soon lose essential funding without Democratic support for a congressional spending plan to keep the government running.

DREAMer deported as Homeland Security disputes circumstances

A 23-year-old undocumented immigrant who had been protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy has been deported to Mexico, according to court documents and Department of Homeland Security records. The deportation, the man's lawyers said, is the first of its kind under the administration of President Donald Trump.

Rep. Steve King celebrates DREAMer’s deportation

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa, an inveterate advocate of immigration reform and border security, noted the deportation of an illegal alien, Juan Manuel Montes, a so-called "DREAMer" who entered the United States more than a decade ago as a child. In a Twitter post, King added a photograph of a mug of beer to the words, "Border patrol, this one's for you."

To those who do not want immigrants or refugees in Peterborough for fear that they will use "our funds": I say immigrants make us stronger. Consider that most refugees/ undocumented immigrants are younger than the average age of 48 in Peterborough, that most jobs they do pay less than jobs that Americans have, that they pay taxes , but do not collect Social Security, that they are often professionals who work in jobs far below their educational training.

The Trump administration vowed Tuesday to crack down on MS-13, a notoriously brutal Central American street gang blamed for a recent series of killings in suburban New York, and accused Obama-era border policies of allowing its ranks to flourish. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly Sunday defended plans to hire thousands of additional immigration and border-control agents, saying the Trump administration's lower bar on criminal behavior by undocumented immigrants merits a larger force. Kelly, on NBC's Meet the Press , dismissed the idea that he's creating a "deportation force," and noted that U.S. law says people here illegally should leave or be deported.

San Francisco seeks ban on ‘sanctuary city’ order: report

San Francisco asked a federal judge Friday to halt enforcement of President Trump's executive order blocking federal money from so-called "sanctuary cities," according to a new report. The city argued in a request alongside nearby Santa Clara county that Trump cannot withhold federal funds without approval from Congress, NBC News reported Friday .

Two hard-line opponents of illegal immigration who have held leadership posts at two organizations labeled as hate groups have obtained high-level advisory jobs at federal immigration agencies in the Department of Homeland Security. Jon Feere, a former legal policy analyst for the Center for Immigration Studies, or CIS, has been hired as an adviser to Thomas D. Homan, the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to Homeland Security spokesman David Lapan.
