California sues for-profit school over ‘false promises’

California's attorney general is suing an online, for-profit university alleging that officials there made false promises to entice students and illegally tried to collect their overdue debt. Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed the suit against San Diego-based Ashford University Wednesday.

A Northwestern University microbiologist suspected in the stabbing death of a 26-year-old man in Chicago is due in a California courtroom. Wyndham Lathem, a Northwestern associate professor, and Andrew Warren, a financial officer at Oxford University in England, were sought in a cross-country chase on first-degree murder charges in the death of Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau.

Ghost Ship Warehouse Had Makeshift Stairwell and No Evidence of Smoke Detectors, Officials Say

The California warehouse where a horrific fire left dozens of people dead did not have any evidence of smoke detectors, was equipped with a makeshift stairwell and had no exits on the second floor, officials said Wednesday. The officials described a terrifying scene that played out as fire ripped through the building, known as the Ghost Ship, on Dec. 2, with people inside the darkened structure overcome by smoke as the building's only exit was blocked by flames.
