Missouri’s teen marriage law is a fair compromise

Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed a new bill into law this week which alters the state's requirements for marriages involving children under the age of 16. Critics hoping for a more restrictive cutoff may see it as only trimming around the edges of a very real problem, but the state was also at risk of going too far in interfering in the rights of families. There had previously been no minimum age for marriage, though children under the age of fifteen required either parental approval or the intervention of a judge.

Raymond Kethledge, one of the finalists President Donald Trump is considering for the Supreme Court, has never explicitly stated his views on abortion or same-sex marriage. But in April, Kethledge, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, ruled in favor of Cathedral Buffet, a church-run Ohio restaurant being sued by the government because congregants were allegedly being "spiritually coerced" by their pastor to work without pay.

Pastor Protection Act passes despite discrimination concerns

A Pastor Protection Act that supporters say protects religious freedom - but critics call unnecessary and discriminatory against gay couples - passed the Ohio House on Wednesday. The bill says that no licensed minister or religious society can be forced to perform or host a marriage ceremony that does not conform to their sincerely held religious beliefs while protecting them from lawsuits.
