Polish president visits statue at center of trans-Atlantic row

Polish President Andrzej Duda stopped at Exchange Place yesterday as Jersey City and the region's Polish community remained locked in a fight over the city's plan to relocate the Katyn monument. Duda and his entourage met with Mayor Steve Fulop and his entourage under a tent set up near the statue, which commemorates the massacre of over 20,000 Polish people during World War II.

12 Hudson County heroes to be honored at Valor Awards luncheon

A dozen first-responders, some who risked their lives to save others last year, will be honored next week at the Hudson County 200 Club's annual Valor Awards luncheon. The special honorees are seven Jersey City police officers, one Hudson County Prosecutor's Office detective, three Bayonne firefighters and a corrections officer.

Fulop: I’d support Menendez for re-election

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who sources said had been eyeing a run for the U.S. Senate next year, said Thursday he would support Sen. Robert Menendez for re-election if Menendez seeks a third full term. In a statement given hours after Menendez's federal corruption case ended in a mistrial, Fulop said he looks forward to Menendez's "continued advocacy for New Jersey."

Drug dealer sentenced to 17 years for selling heroin in Hoboken

A Jersey City drug dealer was sentenced this week to more than 17 years in prison for selling heroin in Hoboken on multiple occasions, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced. Travis "Mush" Thomas, 27, pleaded guilty in July to an indictment charging him with one count of conspiracy to distribute heroin and seven substantive counts of heroin distribution.

Cunningham backs Fulop

State Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham endorsed Mayor Steve Fulop's re-election bid, telling a crowd of people gathered at Dr. Lena Edwards Park on Pine Street that Fulop can help make Jersey City "the kind of city that it was imagined to be many, many years ago." Cunningham is the third and final Hudson County state senator to pledge support for Fulop, who received full-throated endorsements from Sens. Nicholas Sacco, of North Bergen, and Brian Stack, of Union City.

Small plane goes down on Avenue E A small Piper PA-28 plane crashed on Avenue E between 41st and 42nd Streets on the morning of Sunday, February 19, injuring the pilot and causing damage to several vehicles and wires, according to the Bayonne Police Department. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found pieces of the mangled plane dispersed on the street and hanging from telephone wires, while the body of the plane fell upside down onto the street, according to the Bayonne Fire Department.

More than 1,000 gallons of electric fluid leaking into Hudson River, Coast Guard says

JERSEY CITY -- An electric pipe leak under the Hudson River has sent hundreds of gallons of electric fluid into the Newport Marina. A cement-encased PSE&G power cable that sits deep beneath the Hudson River is believed to have been leaking dielectric fluid into the waterway for at least month, according to U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe.

WASHINGTON - New Jersey welcomed 275 Syrian refugees in the past 12 months, even as the state was one of only two in the nation that refused to help in the resettlement effort. The refugees were among the 11,491 from Syria who settled in the U.S. as President Barack Obama met his goal of accepting 10,000.
