President Trump's absence for the second year in a row from the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner may end up being the least controversial thing about Saturday night's gathering of the White House press corps. Chatter online amongst Washington, D.C., journalists and some in the administration's orbit after the event was full of criticism for comedian Michelle Wolf, who was the evening's headliner; criticism and soul-searching about the annual event itself; and an effort by former White House press secretary Sean Spicer to pressure the leadership of the White House Correspondents' Association into answering for Wolf's vulgar, personal jabs leveled primarily at the president and his inner circle.

South Carolina based Associated Press reporter Meg Kinnard ripped the White House Correspondent's Association Dinner Saturday night for making it harder for reporters in red states to work and be trusted there. The dinner featured vile personal attacks by comedienne Michelle Wolf on senior White House officials Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway.

Gov. Paul LePage is leaving office this year with a bang, sponsoring more bills in the 128th Legislature than at any time in his tenure - but that doesn't mean his success is increasing as his administration succumbs to term limits. Since the beginning of the 128th Legislature in December 2016, LePage has sponsored 87 bills, but only 21 of them have made it into law so far - including three that he sponsored but then wouldn't sign, allowing them into law on their own.
President Donald Trump is sharpening his aim at familiar political targets who face elections this year. He struck that theme in a campaign-style rally Saturday night in an Upper Midwest state of Michigan that gave him a surprising victory in the 2016 election.
Republican Congressman Steve Knight's leading election opponents argued over how best to achieve Democratic goals on immigration, gun control and stifling the Trump administration during a sometimes scrappy debate Saturday night. It got heated when candidates Bryan Caforio and Katie Hill accused each other of lying in an exchange about whether the Caforio campaign was the source of negative literature about Hill distributed at the state Democratic Party convention, when Hill defended her refusal to join Caforio and Jess Phoenix in signing the "People's Pledge" to keep "dark money" independent expenditures out of the contest and when Hill tried to press her advantage as the longest resident of California's 25th House District.

In the already heated battle over gun control, the state's highest court has dropped one giant hot potato on the Legislature's doorstep - even as lawmakers are looking toward a midsummer end to the session. The Supreme Judicial Court, following some rather pointed instructions from the US Supreme Court, recently overturned the state's ban on civilian use of stun guns - Tasers and weapons that use an electrical current or beam "designed to incapacitate temporarily, injure, or kill ."
