What are your privacy expectations?

Did anyone really think there wouldn't be a price to pay for all the disruptive changes that we've made an indispensable part of our lives the past 15 years? As long as it is free, social media seems like a harmless idea. Now that we're aware of the lack of privacy and data security, we are learning how hacks, leaks and exploitation of our personal information is disrupting our lives.

Opinion: Aviation Industry May Be Vulnerable to Cyberattack Through Its Global Supply Chain

In March, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a troubling alert: Since the same month two years before, Russian state-sponsored hackers had been infiltrating the nation's electricity grid and various infrastructure industries, including aviation, collecting information on how the networks were organized and what systems' controls they had in place. While no sabotage appears to have been perpetrated, the unsettling question remains - what are the Russians going to do with the data they collected? While all these industries, especially their biggest players, tend to have extensive cybersecurity in place, it may not be as comprehensive as the nation would hope.

Wolf must act to make fracking safer

Editor: I would like Gov. Wolf to acknowledge, address, and then fix problems to make fracking safe as he promised in his first campaign. Sadly, it's become obvious that the governor is ignoring a consensus of Democrats who are concerned that fracking is contributing to climate change, by leaking methane and stifling the growth of renewables while gas is falsely promoted as "clean energy."

Shelley Mayer for Senate

Never mind the millions of dollars of attack ads depicting Shelley Mayer as a corrupt crony Democrat and caricaturing Julie Killian as a Trump-robot Republican. The candidates in next Tuesday's Westchester special election for state Senate are both accomplished, competent women.

Your Views: Funding childhood initiatives is a bipartisan issue

As a soon-to-be graduate with a degree in social work, the importance of advocacy and being politically involved, both locally and nationally, is becoming abundantly clear to me. I was given an opportunity to let my voice be heard, and it was an experience I'll always be thankful for.

From the desk of… Avoiding a debt crisis

The Congressional Budget Office last week released its annual budget and economic outlook report, and although the news was gruesome, the report was greeted in Washington with a giant yawn. The assumption among Republicans and Democrats is that the political rewards for curbing runaway budget deficits are too meager to justify the risks.

A week to mourn the NRA’s death grip on our politics

This week marks the anniversary of two bloody events in America: the mass shooting at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007. After both, Congress scrambled to lower flags, stage moments of silence and offer thoughts and prayers - then proceeded to pass measures at the behest of the gun lobby.

Rep. Jones says coal efforts not dead

In response to Mr. Kroop's April 12 letter regarding coal ash legislation that I worked extremely hard to pass for the past two years, I fully agree that public notification of coal ash pond drainage after it has begun is far from ideal. I certainly welcome specific suggestions from Mr. Kroop, or any of your readers, on a better path to pass much-needed coal ash legislation.
